Dendrobium hancockii

Dendrobium hancockii is a stunning epiphytic orchid prized for its delicate, fragrant blooms and elegant growth habit. Native to Southeast Asia, this species produces sprays of small, waxy flowers ranging from white to pale pink, often with contrasting lip markings, and blooms reliably during the cooler months.

Dendrobium species are renowned for their vigour and adaptability, making them ideal for both experienced collectors and orchid enthusiasts. Hancockii exemplifies this resilience while maintaining the refined aesthetic that orchid lovers seek.

Care is straightforward. Provide bright, indirect light—a north or east-facing position works well. Water thoroughly during the growing season, reducing frequency as temperatures cool in autumn and winter. Ensure excellent drainage using bark-based orchid media. This species appreciates a distinct temperature drop between day and night to trigger flowering; a winter rest period with cooler nights and reduced watering will reward you with abundant blooms.

The plant thrives in moderate to high humidity and appreciates good air circulation. Feed fortnightly during active growth with diluted orchid fertiliser. Repot every two to three years after flowering or when new growth emerges.

Perfect for windowsills, conservatories, or shaded garden areas in temperate climates, Dendrobium hancockii combines natural beauty with manageable care requirements—a rewarding addition to any orchid collection.
