Bulbophyllum hahlianum is found in Papua and New Guinea, the Mouluccas and Sulawesi in beach swamps, as a hot growing epiphyte on tree trunks in areas of high rainfall and always near the coast at elevations around 60 meters with a thick, branching, brown and brittle rhizome with forward facing bristles with 8 to 10 cm spaced, apressed to the rhizome, erect to suberect, ovoid to oblong pseudobulbs ringed basally by stiff bristles and carrying a single, apical, erect to suberect, petiolate, leathery and stiff, oblong leaf that blooms from late summer to early spring on a basal, often two per pseudobulb, to 7 cm long, single flowered inflorescence that holds the glossy, non-resupinate, thick and fleshy, strongly fragrant flowers below the leaves. This is a hot growing species that needs ample water, shade and large slabs for the plant to roam.
