Gastrochilus japonicus is found as a miniature, warm to cold growing epiphyte in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan in mountainous regions at elevations of 200 to 2000 meters on the branches of pines and broad leafed trees as well as tree trunks, with a short stem enveloped by imbricating leaf bases and carrying fleshy, linear-oblong, somewhat falcate, acute, unequally bilobed apically leaves that blooms in the fall on axillary, hanging, shorter than the leaves, densely several to many [2 to 7] flowered inflorescence.
Mounting on tree fern, wood branch or cork plus providing semi-shade, cold to cool temperatures, and ample water year round will make this cute miniature species happy.
