Tillandsia ehlersiana

Tillandsia ehlersiana is a striking, low-maintenance air plant valued for its distinctive bulbous base, silvery foliage, and soft rose-coloured inflorescence. Native to the semi-arid regions of Chiapas, Mexico, this species grows in dry oak forests and on rocky outcrops, where it is adapted to bright light, airflow, and low moisture conditions.

Covered in dense trichomes, Tillandsia ehlersiana has a characteristic grey-white appearance that helps it retain moisture, making it particularly drought-tolerant and well suited to warm, dry environments. It produces a simple inflorescence with tubular purple flowers, adding contrast to its pale foliage.

This species thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from good airflow. Like all air plants, it does not require soil and can be mounted on wood, cork, or wire for display. Allow the plant to dry fully between waterings, as it prefers less frequent moisture compared to softer-leaved varieties.

As it matures, Tillandsia ehlersiana will produce offsets (“pups”), gradually forming a cluster over time. Its sculptural form and hardy nature make it an excellent choice for both collectors and beginners seeking a reliable, easy-care air plant.
